The 2024 Mercedes EQE and BMW i4 are two of the most exciting new electric luxury sedans hitting the market. Both vehicles showcase the latest in electric vehicle (EV) technology and luxury features from their respective brands. To find out whether the Mercedes-Benz EQE or BMW i4 better fits your needs and preferences, check out this head-to-head comparison.

Exterior Design

The 2024 Mercedes EQE and BMW i4 both feature striking exterior designs that blend brand-specific styling cues with aerodynamic efficiency. The EQE showcases a sleek, rounded silhouette with a smooth front end and a distinctive black panel grille. Its clean lines and sculpted surfaces give it a futuristic yet elegant appearance. The EQE measures approximately 196.9 inches long and 77.2 inches wide, providing ample interior space.

In contrast, the BMW i4 sports a more aggressive, coupe-like profile. Its bold kidney grille and sharp headlights create a dynamic front fascia, while the sloping roofline and muscular rear haunches convey a sense of power and performance. The i4 is slightly smaller than the EQE, measuring around 188.5 inches long and 72.9 inches wide, but still offers a spacious cabin.

Both models come with a range of exterior color options and wheel designs, allowing you to customize your vehicle to your liking. The Mercedes SUV offers a palette of sophisticated metallic shades, while the i4 includes both classic BMW colors and unique hues specific to the electric model.

Interior Luxury and Comfort

Step inside the Mercedes EQE, and you'll be treated to a spacious, luxurious cabin that showcases the brand's commitment to premium materials and cutting-edge technology. The interior boasts a sophisticated design, outstanding build quality, and plenty of soft-touch surfaces.

The EQE's seats are clad in a variety of leather upholstery, including synthetic leather, genuine leather, or a combination of synthetic leather and microfiber. The sedan comes standard with 12-way power front seats with heating and memory settings, a panoramic sunroof, and ambient interior lighting. Massaging and ventilation functions are available for ultimate comfort. With generous headroom and legroom in both rows, plus a large trunk, the EQE is well suited for daily commutes and long road trips alike.

The BMW i4's interior also prioritizes luxury and technology, albeit with a more driver-focused layout. It's solid, handsome, and understated and uses high-quality materials. The i4 offers sport seats with synthetic leather upholstery and power front seats as standard. For enhanced comfort, you can get upgrades such as genuine leather upholstery, heated and cooled front seats, and a heated steering wheel.

The i4's rear seats are slightly less spacious than the EQE's due to its coupe-like roofline, but the cabin still offers ample room for four adults. The i4 also boasts a sizable trunk, with a wide opening for easy loading and unloading.

Performance and Range

In terms of performance, the 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQE comes in two main variants: the 350 version with 288 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque and the 500 model with 402 horsepower and 633 lb-ft of torque. The latter can sprint from zero to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds thanks to its dual-motor setup. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available as an option.

The BMW i4 offers more performance options, starting with the rear-wheel-drive eDrive35 which produces 281 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The eDrive40 bumps the output to 335 horsepower, while the all-wheel-drive xDrive40 is rated at 396 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. The range-topping i4 M50 boasts 536 horsepower and 586 lb-ft, enabling a zero-to-60 mph time of 3.7 seconds.

When it comes to range, the Mercedes EQE delivers an estimated 280 to 298 miles on a single charge, which is among the best ratings in Mercedes EVs. The BMW i4, in contrast, offers 227 to 307 miles of range across its lineup. If you use a DC fast charger, you can recharge the EQE's battery from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes. With approximately the same amount of time, the i4 can reach a full charge.

Advanced Technology

To provide connectivity and entertainment on the road, the 2024 Mercedes EQE comes standard with a 12.8-inch touch-screen display, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a 15-speaker Burmester surround-sound audio system, and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. For a next-generation driving experience, opt for the available Hyperscreen. The massive 56-inch display spans the entire dashboard and includes advanced technologies such as augmented reality navigation and "Hey Mercedes" voice control.

The BMW i4's iDrive 8 system is also impressive. It features a large 14.9-inch touch-screen display, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless smartphone connectivity, a 10-speaker sound system, and BMW's Intelligent Personal Assistant.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Both the Mercedes-Benz EQE and BMW i4 come standard with a wealth of driver-assistance technologies, such as forward automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure alert, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, and driver-attention monitoring. However, the Mercedes EV has the upper hand in this department with its longer list of standard driver aids. Every model offers reverse automated emergency braking, front cross-traffic warning, crosswind assistance, parking sensors, active parking assistance, and a 360-degree camera system. These features are either optional or unavailable on the BMW.

While official crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety are not yet available for the 2024 models, both the EQE and i4 are expected to perform well thanks to their robust construction and low center of gravity.
